Safety

At Sheehan’s Gas Company, nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and our community. Natural gas is a safe and efficient fuel when used correctly. Please familiarize yourself with the important safety information on this page to help keep your family and property safe.

If You Suspect a Gas Leak (Smell Rotten Eggs)

Natural gas is colorless and odorless, so we add a substance called mercaptan to give it a distinct “rotten egg” smell for your safety. If you smell gas, act fast!

  • LEAVE IMMEDIATELY: Evacuate everyone from the building or area.
  • DON’T USE ELECTRONICS: Do not operate anything that could cause a spark. This includes light switches, phones (including cell phones), garage door openers, or any appliances.
  • CALL FROM A SAFE DISTANCE: Once you are safely away from the area, first call 911, then call us at 320-365-4400.

Call 811 Before You Dig

Planning a project that involves digging? Whether it’s planting a tree or building a deck, you must call 811 at least a few days before you start. This is a free service that marks the approximate location of underground utility lines, including natural gas lines, to prevent dangerous and costly damage. It’s the law, and it’s the safe thing to do.

Keep Your Meter Clear

Your gas meter needs to be accessible for our technicians and clear of obstructions for safety. In the winter, please gently clear snow and ice from and around your meter using a broom, not a shovel. Ensure there is a clear path to the meter and that it is not covered by snow from plows or blowers. This prevents damage and ensures your service and safety equipment can function properly.
